In March 1984, the Diabetes Awareness Program became a major commitment of the association. The program name was expanded to: Diabetes Awareness and Action. The main objective of the program is to reduce the number of new cases of blindness caused by diabetic retinopathy through education, detection, and research. Diabetic retinopathy is a leading cause of new cases of adult blindness. There is an emerging global epidemic of diabetes that can be traced back to rapid increases in overweight, obesity and physical inactivity. Diabetes is a “silent killer”, every 10 seconds a person dies of a diabetes-related causes. More than 285 million people worldwide live with diabetes.
